Every once in a while the internet does something it was actually designed to do. It stops you cold. Not a scroll-pause. Not a “that’s kinda cool.” I mean a full stop — thumb frozen mid-air, brain going, wait… what the hell is THIS? That’s exactly what happened when a clip of “Temptress” by Silent Vice hit my feed. I wasn’t hunting for new music. I wasn’t digging through label promos. I wasn’t in show-prep mode. I was just doing late-night algorithm roulette like the rest of civilization — and then this wall of sound came blasting through my phone speakers and hijacked my entire nervous system. So naturally I did what any sane radio host / live sound lifer would do — I looped it. Again. And again. And again. Because it’s just that fucking good.
I’ve been around music long enough that very little genuinely surprises me anymore. Radio. Studio production. Twenty-five years running live sound on stages and tours — watching bands either rise to the moment or fold under the weight of their own ambition. You develop a radar. You can hear when something is built right — structurally, emotionally, atmospherically. Silent Vice set that radar off immediately. There’s a density to “Temptress” that doesn’t feel accidental. It feels intentional — engineered. The guitars don’t just riff, they loom. The atmosphere doesn’t decorate the track — it surrounds it. If you live anywhere near the sonic neighborhood of Tool or Deftones — that shadowy space where melody and menace share oxygen — this is going to feel familiar in all the right ways while still standing firmly on its own legs.
Digging a little deeper, Silent Vice are coming out of San Diego, California — which tracks perfectly once you hear the textures they’re working with. There’s something about West Coast heavy that carries a different gravity. Maybe it’s the collision of surf, skate, punk, and metal DNA. Maybe it’s just proximity to creative fault lines. Whatever it is — Silent Vice are channeling it. This isn’t nostalgia-bait nu-metal revival. It’s modern, deliberate, and fully aware of its lineage without being trapped by it. And what makes it even more impressive is that this isn’t a brand-new overnight project. According to their Facebook presence, the band has been active since 2010 — which explains the maturity and confidence baked into the sound. This isn’t a band figuring itself out. This is a band that already knows exactly what it is.
Here’s my unofficial industry metric: if I play a track once — it’s good. Three times — it’s interesting. If I lose count — it matters. I stopped counting with “Temptress.” And while I’ve been writing this very post, I’ve had the rest of their catalog running on Spotify — and I can confidently say it wasn’t a one-off lightning strike. The depth is there across the board. Song after song holds that same emotional weight and sonic intention. That’s when you know you’re not just hearing a great single — you’re hearing a band with an identity.
Since we’re not broadcasting the track (and therefore can legally share the streaming source), you can hear exactly what knocked me sideways right here: Listen to “Temptress” by Silent Vice on Spotify — https://open.spotify.com/track/6TT9gReKveo6wQCUrTJ0Yj?si=0532c973043c4210
This is exactly the discovery pipeline I love. Random clip → genuine reaction → deep dive → radio feature. Because Rolling with Scissors has never been about chasing what’s popular — it’s about amplifying what deserves to be heard. And Silent Vice absolutely fall into that category. I’ve already reached out about getting proper broadcast files, lining up a deep feature, and hopefully setting up an interview — because there’s a story behind this sound, and I want listeners to hear it unfold in long form the way it was meant to.

One of the perks of doing this show as long as I have is recognizing bands before the industry machine fully grabs hold of them. This feels like one of those moments. So consider this your early warning shot: go hit play, turn it up louder than you should, and let it rattle something loose in your chest. Because if this track is the doorway, I want to hear what’s behind the rest of the house — and something tells me we all will soon enough.
