My four-legged baby girl got a new doctor today.
If you read the last post about her and Tucker teaming up to murder a stuffed shark, you know she’s got plenty of energy to burn. But with all the chaos that came with moving, she hadn’t seen a vet in a while. Today, we changed that.
She needed her heartworm check and her dose of NexGard, and we ended up going to Shelton Veterinary Clinic. They’re not just small animal vets—they also handle large animals, and the best part? They’re willing to come to us if I ever have trouble finding transportation. That kind of understanding makes a huge difference when you’re disabled and dealing with mobility challenges.
Julie was on her best behavior, of course. They even trimmed her nails. The only note from the vet? She’s slightly overweight. That one’s on me—she loves her treats, and I have a hard time saying no to that face.
I used to take her to the Humane Society—great people, and it’s where I adopted her—but I’ll admit, I sometimes get nervous bringing her places. She’s part pitbull, and even though she’s a total sweetheart who just wants to play with everyone, that big head makes some folks uneasy before they even give her a chance.
But the folks at Shelton? They didn’t flinch. They treated her with love and respect, just like she deserves. I couldn’t have asked for better care for my girl.
Now, even though Julie’s not a certified service animal, she absolutely helps me out in ways that matter. Some of you might be wondering what I mean when I say she helps with “weight-bearing.” So here’s the deal: when you’re in a chair, you learn to use what’s around you to move and transfer. When I first got Julie, I asked her to hop up on the bed and hold the sheet down so I could pull myself up. I only had to show her once—she just knew what to do. Whether it’s because she realizes her dad is different or she’s just that smart… probably both.
