Remember that recent disaster where I was trying to get my current rig repaired? While wading through that swamp of bureaucracy, I was informed it’s time to order a brand-new chair.
Insurance, in its infinite wisdom, allows you to get a new wheelchair once every five years. Imagine if society told you that you could only buy one pair of shoes every half-decade. Good luck with the gaping holes in your soles by year three.
So, the process begins. But here is where the medical system’s logic completely falls off a cliff.
When you go buy a new car, you test drive it. You’re dropping $50,000 to $75,000 on a vehicle, so you sit in the seat, test the handling, and take it down the highway. Plus, if your car goes into the shop for two weeks, the dealership hands you a loaner that drives like a modern automobile.
A complex power wheelchair costs anywhere from $30,000 to over $100,000. Yet, there are no wheelchair dealerships. You don't get to test drive a damn thing.
If your chair breaks down and goes into the shop for two months, you might get a loaner—if you're lucky. But that loaner wasn't built for you. It's a generic, beaten-down piece of metal that fits like a bad suit, leaving you sitting in agony or trapped in bed waiting for parts to ship from halfway across the world.
Instead of a test drive, somebody hands you a brochure or opens a webpage, asks you to point at features, lets you pick a color, and says, "Great, see you in six months." You are dropping luxury-car money on a machine customized to static paper measurements.
Insurance will gladly pay thousands for a "custom" seat cushion and backrest—usually designed by an engineer who has clearly never had to sit in a power chair for 18 hours a day. But again, you can't test out the cushion ahead of time. You pick a chunk of high-tech foam off a webpage and pray to God it doesn't destroy your hips or give you pressure sores. If the rep miscalculates an angle or density by half an inch, you’re trapped in an ergonomic nightmare for the next 1,825 days.
To make it more absurd, insurance essentially boils every complex machine down to a single generic medical billing code: "Requires Power Wheelchair." But the choices on the market are vastly different:
- Quickie: Manufactured by Sunrise Medical. In my opinion? This is the Yugo of the power chair world.
- Permobil: Originally founded in Sweden, this used to be the absolute Mercedes-Benz or Cadillac of the industry—smooth, high-end, and engineered like a luxury vehicle. Except now they manufacture a lot of them stateside, and the quality control has shifted.
- Quantum: My current platform. Think of this as the Ford Ranger or F-150 of power chairs. It’s a workhorse.
I’m not buying a Mercedes if I can’t drive it first. Plus, I don't treat my chair like a delicate indoor sedan; I treat it like a truck or a mountain bike. If someone else is going to ride across the grass on a bike, I’m driving right through it in my chair. There are purists who act like you shouldn't abuse a power chair off the pavement. To them, I say: go fuck yourself. I should be able to go anywhere anyone else can go.
That said, medical engineering has massive blind spots. Nobody has invented a wheelchair tire that handles deep sand, and not a single power chair in the world can handle snow or ice. The second your drive wheels hit a patch of Midwest slush, you aren't going anywhere—you're just sitting there spinning your wheels, stranded like a turtle on its back.
Then there is the power supply. Literally.
Right now, I am sitting on top of two 12-volt, deep-cycle marine boat batteries. These absolute lead bricks weigh 50 pounds each, jacking the chair’s weight up to 430 pounds before my 200-pound ass even sits down.
In a world where every phone, laptop, and lawnmower runs on lightweight lithium-ion, the wheelchair industry is still using 30-year-old boat tech. Why? Because the FDA and insurance regulators are apparently terrified a lithium pack is going to ignite under your rear end. Meanwhile, in Europe, they build chairs with swappable, lightweight battery packs you can pop out and charge. In America? Nope. You sit on a 100-pound stack of lead and like it.
Because you're lugging around heavy-duty marine batteries, you can't just throw a spare in a backpack. The spec sheet proudly claims the new chair gets a "22-mile range." Translated from PR-speak to reality: you can go about 10 miles out, and then you'd better turn around immediately or you're getting stranded.
And don't get me started on charging devices. I sit on top of two massive batteries that could power a small house, yet getting a USB port on the chair to charge my phone or tablet is an exercise in pure stupidity.
Option A is a clunky adapter that plugs directly into the joystick’s main charging port. Once it's in, good luck yanking it out when it's time to actually plug the chair into the wall. You can’t charge the device and the chair at the same time.
Option B is a hardwired power step-down converter running straight off the controller. Naturally, insurance deems a USB port "not medically necessary," so that’s another $300 out-of-pocket add-on. Sure, people will say, "Just carry a portable power bank in your bag!" But why the hell should I carry extra weight when I am literally sitting on a rolling power grid?
The only upgrade that made me chuckle is the speed. The new spec sheet says it tops out at 7 mph instead of 6 mph. Groundbreaking.
These high-torque electric motors could easily pull 15 or 20 mph, but some corporate safety committee decided disabled people shouldn't move faster than a brisk jog. E-bikes can do 28 mph down the sidewalk, but God forbid a power chair moves briskly. Do I want to do 28 mph in a wheelchair? No, I value my life. But the fact that the computer is a locked, un-tunable black box telling me how fast I'm allowed to move is just insult to injury.
So let's tally up the mandatory fights with Medicare and Medicaid:
They’ll cover Tilt—because sitting in one position all day destroys your spine, so tilting takes the pressure off. They’ll cover Recline—because why wouldn't you want a built-in La-Z-Boy?
But Power Elevation—the feature that raises the seat up to bar or counter height so I can reach a coffee cup or talk to someone eye-to-eye? Denied. Their official stance remains: "Have a helper reach the countertop for you."
Fuck off. Why shouldn't I be as independent as humanly possible?
The math is pure comedy. Insurance will gladly pay a personal care assistant $19 an hour to stand at my elbow just to grab a mug off a top shelf, but they refuse to pay a one-time $1,800 cost for seat elevation. Throw in the $300 USB converter, and I'm staring down over $2,000 out-of-pocket on a "covered" medical device. When you're living on a fixed income, that's a massive hit. If I can't force them to cover it, I'll probably have to run a GoFundMe—which makes me feel dirty, because I hate asking people for money. But logic left this building decades ago.
Now for the one "fun" part of this entire process: color selection.
You can't test drive the machine, you can't get a USB port without paying extra, and you're stuck with marine batteries from 1994, but hey, you get to pick the paint job! My current chair is bright orange—I thought it was cool and highly visible, though drivers try to run you over regardless of what you're driving.
This time around? They offered matte black, glossy black, and powder-coated black.
So, flat black it is. At least while navigating a completely broken system, my rig will look like a stealth rat rod.
