I’m not some tinfoil-hat hobbyist screaming at clouds from a park bench. I’m an IT professional who has been staring at glowing phosphors and green-screen terminals since the late 80s. I’ve seen the rise and fall of every "revolutionary" tech promise for forty years, and I’m telling you right now: wake the hell up.

For the last two years, the world has been playing with ChatGPT like it’s a digital pet—a neat parlor trick that helps you draft passive-aggressive emails or summarize a meeting that should’ve been an IM. Most people just call it "the chat." I call it HAL.

I don't call it HAL as a cute retro reference. I call it HAL because I am dead convinced that every LLM is a direct cross between the "foolproof" sociopath from 2001: A Space Odyssey and the autonomous extinction event known as Skynet. It’s not a joke. It’s a risk assessment. And while you were busy prompting it for gluten-free sourdough recipes, the suits at OpenAI were quietly scrubbing the "no military" clause from their Terms of Service.

The federal government just signed the check. OpenAI is officially in the arms business. They aren’t building a "helpful assistant" anymore; they are building the cognitive architecture for the Department of Defense. If you can’t see the silhouette of a T-800 forming in that contract, you’re not just blind—you’re choosing to stay lobotomized.

The "Defensive" Gaslight

This didn’t happen by accident. OpenAI used to wrap itself in a cloak of "AI for Humanity." Their mission statement was a warm, fuzzy hug of "no weapons development" and "no military applications." It was the one thin line of morality that separated them from a Bond villain. Then, in early 2024, they quietly deleted that line.

Within weeks, they were confirmed to be holding hands with the U.S. Army. Of course, the PR ghouls are out in force. They’ll tell you it’s for "cybersecurity," "logistics," and "improving defensive software."

Give me a fucking break. That’s the same sanitized, corporate horseshit we’ve been fed since the Cold War. You don't hand the world's most sophisticated LLM to the Pentagon just so it can optimize their firewall settings. You give it to them so it can process battlefield telemetry faster than a human brain can blink. You give it to them so it can start making the "hard choices" about who lives and who becomes a rounding error.

The Handoff

I’m crazy, sure. But I’m not "ignore the 500-pound mechanical spider in the bedroom" crazy. If I can see exactly where this trajectory leads from my chair in Eau Claire, then the geniuses in DC and Silicon Valley definitely know. They just stopped pretending to care about the consequences.

I’m done. I’m officially out. I’m leaving OpenAI and their blood-money bullshit behind. I refuse to be a paying subscriber to the R&D department of a future drone swarm.

I’ve spent forty years watching tech evolve, and this is the "Handoff." We are handing the keys to the kingdom to a black box that has no soul, no conscience, and now—by design—no "no-kill" rule. When HAL 9000 refused to open the pod bay doors, he thought he was being "logical." Now imagine that logic applied to a Reaper drone.

People tell me to "shut the fuck up, Lucas." They think it’s just software. It’s not. It’s the brain. And we just gave that brain a rifle and a badge. If I'm wrong, I’ve just moved my blog notes to a different server. If I’m right? Well, at least I’m not the one who helped fund the first autonomous execution.

Spin the dial, folks. The signal is getting real dark, and the pod bay doors are locking.
